The Moonstone Messenger Bag is a great confident beginner/intermediate sewists project. This Messenger Bag has the classic lines that we all love. A bit gothic, this bag leaves much to be customized. With multiple flap closures and material options, this can be extremely high end, or utilitarian. The included graveyard zipper facing is a fun option to goth it up a bit! There are many options for this Bag; top zipper closure, 3 zipper pockets, water bottle/coffee cup holder, back slip pocket with magnet closure, additional interior I-Pad/ChromeBook/Reader slip pocket, 8 card slots, and even a key lanyard. The Moonstone Messenger Bag is incredibly versatile and useful!

              Alternative Strap Anchors and Zipper Facings are available from Cork and Copper Designs! There are endless ways to customise your Moonstone Messenger Bag.

The interior I-Pad/ChromeBook/Reader slip pocket is 12” (30.5 cm) wide x 8" (20.3 cm) tall.

SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR THE MOONSTONE MESSENGER (FABRIC, INTERFACING, and HARDWARE):

·       EXTERIOR FABRIC – 1/2 yard/meter x 58” wide – Cotton Woven, Canvas, Cork, WPC (Water-Proof Canvas)/WRO (Water Resistant Oxford), or Vinyl for the bag Exterior. (1/2-yard roll of Vinyl will work, if its non-directional)

·       OPTIONAL: COORDINATING EXTERIOR FABRIC - up to 1/3 yard/meter x 58” wide Leather/Vinyl/Cork Exterior – For the OPTIONAL Top and Bottom Flap Straps, Zipper Facings, Main Adjustable Strap, and OPTIONAL Strap Anchors. (Raw edged materials ONLY. Materials that fray can’t be used for these parts).

·       LINING FABRIC - 1/2 yard/meter - Cotton Woven or WPC (Water-Proof Canvas)/WRO (Water Resistant Oxford) for the bag Lining.

·       COORDINATING LINING FABRIC – up to 1/3 yard/meter x 58” wide – For the Zipper Pockets and Slip Pocket.

·       LIGHTWEIGHT WOVEN INTERFACING 120gsm- 1 1/4 yard/meter x 58” wide - Pellon SF101 (or equivalent 120gsm: EBfuse, STIFI, etc.)

TIP: 240gsm can be used for a heavier duty bag, or a less slouchy one.

TIP: Raw edge materials (Cork or Vinyl) and Waterproof Fabric do not need interfacing.

·       OPTIONAL: FUSIBLE FLEECE – 1 yard/meter x 20” wide OR 1/2 yard/meter x 40” wide - If using Woven, Quilting Cotton, or Canvas for Exterior.

·       OPTIONAL: DECOVIL LIGHT – 1 yard/meter x 20” wide.

·       OPTIONAL: STIFF STUFF/PELTEX/CRAFT PLASTIC STABILIZER- 11.75” (29.8 cm) x 2.5” (6.4 cm). One piece for the bottom of the bag.

·       WEBBING -up to 2.5 yards/meters.

·       D-RINGS/TRIANGLE RINGS – 2 x 1” (2.5 cm) OR 2 x 1-1/2” (3.8 cm) D-Ring - For the Main Adjustable Strap Anchors.

·       LOBSTER CLASPS - 2 x 1” (2.5 cm) OR 2 x 1-1/2” (3.8 cm) Lobster Clasps for the Main Adjustable Strap.

·       TRI-GLIDE STRAP ADJUSTER – 1 x 1” (2.5 cm) OR 1 x 1-1/2” (3.8 cm) Strap Adjuster - For the Main Adjustable Strap.

·       ZIPPERS – Total 47” (119.4 cm) length of #5 Zipper Tape and 4 x #5 Zipper Pulls.

-1 x 14” (35.6 cm) length of #5 Zipper Tape, and 1 x #5 Zipper Pull, for the Top Main Zipper Closure.

-3 x 11” (28 cm) lengths of #5 Zipper Tape, and 3 x #5 Zipper Pulls, for the Top Flap, Front Body, and Inside Zipper Pockets.

TIP: Garment zippers can be used, but be careful of the teeth length, they shorter on pre-manufactured Zippers.

·       OPTIONAL: MAIN FLAP LOCK CLOSURE/MAGNET CLOSURE – 1 OR 2 x Lock/Magnet(s) for the Top Flap.

·       OPTIONAL: EXTERIOR SLIP POCKET LOCK CLOSURE/MAGNET CLOSURE – 1 x Lock/Magnet for the Back Exterior Slip Pocket.

·       OPTIONAL: PIN STYLE BUCKLES – 2 x 1” (2.5 cm) Pin Style Buckles. For the Top Flap Straps. Cannot be used with Webbing Flap Straps.

·       OPTIONAL: SIDE RELEASE BUCKLES – 2 x 1” (2.5 cm) Side Release Buckles. For the Top Flap Straps.

·       OPTIONAL: TRI-GLIDE STRAP ADJUSTERS – 2 x 1” (2.5 cm) Tri-Glide Strap Adjusters. For the Top Flap Straps.

·       OPTIONAL: LOBSTER CLASP and D-RING– 2 of EACH x 1” (2.5 cm) Lobster Clasps and 1” (2.5 cm) D-Rings/Triangle Rings. For the Top Flap Straps.

·       OPTIONAL: ZIPPER END – 1 x Zipper End for the Top Main Zipper Closure.

·       OPTIONAL: ROUND or ½” LOBSTER CLASP – Round OR 1/2” (1.3 cm) Lobster Clasp for the Interior Key Lanyard.

·       OPTIONAL: PARACORD OR BIAS BINDING– 24” (61 cm) of Paracord (or Elastic Paracord) OR

24” (61 cm) of 1/2” (1.3 cm) wide Double Folded Bias Binding, (sewn together) for the Interior Key Lanyard.

·       OPTIONAL: 1 1/4” (3 cm) - 2” (5 cm) WIDE ELASTIC –To hold a coffee cup or water bottle.

·       OPTIONAL: SPIKES/RIVETS – Decorative bag bling to make your Moonstone Messenger Bag POP!

·       MATCHING NYLON OR POLYESTER THREAD, like Gutermann Mara 70 or Topstitching thread. Use what is suitable for your sewing machine and your project.

The Moonstone Messenger Bag Pattern is drafted for use with domestic sewing machines. I have a Pfaff Quilt Expressions 710 and Pfaff Quilt Expression 3.5. I try to make things that don’t need an industrial machine, even though I have an industrial Juki-DDL 8100 eH/x. Please do not post full pictures of the pattern pieces on social media.        

The pattern has both pictures and diagrams/illustrations. There are detailed instructions for every technique, along with “TIPS” and plenty of photos.
